  • Symantec announces 2008 Greater China Visionary Award winners

    (EMAILWIRE.COM, November 28, 2008 ) Hong Kong — Symantec Corp (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the 2008 Visionary Award winners for the Greater China region.     China Mobile Group Zhejiang Company Limited reduces data centre complexity Wang Xiaozheng, director of system optimisation, Department of Information Technology, Business Operation Support Center, China Mobile Group Zhejiang Company Limited, is recognised for utilising Symantec technology to help his company retain its competitive edge in the rapidly-growing telecommunications sector. Wang and his team have standardised the company's IT infrastructure on a variety of Symantec products to improve application availability and prepare a new disaster recovery plan. China Mobile Group Zhejiang Company Limited has improved overall storage utilisation and has seen a reduction in the number of licenses needed. The overall data centre standardisation project has saved US$300,000 per year in IT staff time, as well as US$100,000 worth of improved staff productivity throughout the organisation.

The organisation selected Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC to provide a single system image to simplify management of their CRM system. At the same time, they standardised on Veritas NetBackup at their two data centres. With these deployments, China Telecom Corporation Limited Shanghai Branch now has a flexible architecture based on Symantec technology.

    MTR Corporation Limited lowers costs, improves operational efficiency Daniel Lai, head of Information Technology/Chief Information Officer, MTR Corporation Limited, is recognised for his role in utilising Symantec technology and services to help keep information security on track during its merger with Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation.

    "With the consolidated deployment of a range of Symantec solutions and with the support of Symantec Consulting Services and Symantec Education Services, the team has been able to accommodate 25 per cent annual growth in data volume with no need to increase IT staff," said Daniel Lai. "In addition, the team reduced backup windows threefold while reducing overall administrative time."

    WuXi People's Hospital simplifies data management process
    Liu Yu, IT director, WuXi People's Hospital, is recognised for his role in helping make the hospital's information more secure while reducing costs. With Symantec Storage Foundation HA, Liu Yu and his team have reduced the hospital's system downtime from 15 hours to 15 minutes per year. And with the deployment of Symantec Enterprise Vault, the time required to find an archived email went from an average of multiple hours to two minutes. The consolidation of endpoint security functions with the deployment of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 reduced administrative time from five full time employees to just one, equating to an annual savings of US$73,000. Moreover, despite a doubling of endpoints, the hospital saw a 50 per cent reduction in threats in their environment.
