That said, Microsoft did get one thing right early on that Google still fails to recognize. Starting with the release of Windows 98, Microsoft made sure to release regular direct-to-user updates through Patches. It is high time that the search engine giant learns to implement such direct-to-user security patches.
Google does an alright job fixing the Android security holes when it finds them. The Bluebox Security hole was fixed three days following it being publicized as a problem. While that is good, the Android OEM carriers have released a new patch for a handful of smartphones and none of the tablets, which is a problem.
Google simply needs to tighten security, as the ever-growing mobile market is not interested in dealing with worry over security. While Google has introduced advanced security features, it still does not protect from all malware types.
Exacerbating the problem is that under 40% of Android users are running anything above the 4.1 release. That leaves over 50% running more vulnerable models of the Android.
A security battle is a never-ending one, but the inability to cover up old mistakes and foresee future concerns leaves the Google product in a world of hurt. While Microsoft answers the problems it finds with the direct-to-user approach, Google has no option. It needs to take on the same approach as the old-guard giant and look for ways to get patches to users quickly.
The Microsoft company does not depend on large PC vendors to deliver its patches. It takes care of problems in house whenever possible. Google will have to find a way to do the same thing. What Microsoft did with Acer, Asus, Google must do with the HTC and Samsung customers, along with both smartphone and tablet partners.
The alternative stands as Android effectively leaving the mobile market after users discontinue trust in a company that cannot keep them safe.
