  • Recent Theft of NASA Laptop Brings Problem of Laptop Theft to Light All Over the World

(I-SoftwareNews.Com, August 20, 2012 ) Kowloon, Hong Kong -- Recently, news outlets all over the world were reporting that a NASA laptop stolen during 2011, was unencrypted and contained command and control codes for the international space station.

NASA Inspector General Paul K. Martin testified that the theft of the laptop resulted in the “loss of algorithms” that were used to control the U.S. space station. He also reported that April 2009 and April 2011, 48 NASA laptops were stolen. As of February 1, 2012, NASA reported that only 1% of its laptops were encrypted.

It’s not just government laptops that are being stolen. In fact, according to FBI data, one in ten laptops purchased will be stolen, and only 3% will be recovered.

“Laptop theft has become incredibly common throughout the world,” said Qin Wenling of miTracker, which offers laptop anti-theft software. “Laptops are portable and incredibly easy to steal, and it’s not just the financial loss of the laptop itself that creates problems for individuals and businesses, it’s also the information contained on the laptop, including financial and identity information, passwords and other important information.”

“Just think, if it’s possible to steal NASA laptops, with invaluable information about the United States space program, it’s even easier to steal a laptop from an individual,” said Wenling. “This could leave you open to identity theft, potentially resulting in the loss of a great deal of money, or allowing a thief to destroy your credit. Many of us never think about what would happen if our laptops were stolen, but, individuals should think of all the passwords they have saved on their computers, and all the information contained on them, and then they’ll understand the importance of anti-theft software.”

According to Wenling, laptop tracking software isn’t something that anyone with a laptop should be without. miTracker offers a number of options for users to remotely control the activity of their laptop, from tracking the stolen laptop to remotely wiping data and locking your laptop to data encryption that follows military standards.

“With one in ten laptops being stolen, it’s a very real possibility to fall victim to this type of theft, and it’s a scary thought to realize a thief could have access to all of the most important information in your life,” said Wenling. “It’s comforting to know that anti-theft software is available, because it’s not just about protecting yourself, but it’s also about protecting your family or your business.”
